October 17th, 2015. Undefeated Middleweight King Gennady Golovkin better known as GGG takes on power punching Canadian IBF titleholder David Lemiuex. GGG’s WBA, WBC, & IBO straps are on the line.

Prefight records; Golovkin 33(30)-0 & Lemiuex 34(31)-2.

In June 2015, Lemiuex won the vacant IBF Middleweight Championship by outpointing top rated Cameroonian-French Middleweight contender Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam . He is set to take on the highly avoided devastating puncher Gennady Golovkin as his 1st title defense.

Lemieux has been highly praised for stepping up to take on GGG as his very 1st defense of his IBF title.

Since making his pro debut in May 2006 till May 2015, Golovkin had remain undefeated racking up 30 KO wins over 33 opponents with notable victories over Willie Monroe Jr, Martin Murray, Marco Antonio Rubio, Daniel Geale, Matthew Macklin, Curtis Stevens, Gabriel Rosado & Grzegorz Proksa.

On the other hand, Lemiuex had meaningful wins against Fernando Guerrero, Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam and Gabriel Rosado.

In this fight, Golovkin puts up perhaps the most masterful display of his renown jab; landing more than 50 in the first 2 rounds alone. Through 8 rounds, he landed 170 vs Lemiuex’s 35. The extremely effective use of his left jab negated Lemiuex’s ability to land power punches especially his vaunted left hook.

Golovkin floored Lemiuex in the 4th round with a right hand to the body and inadvertently landed a hard right hand on Lemiuex’s head while he was down on one knee. Referee Steve Willis cautioned GGG but did not deduct a point. This is only the 2nd time that Lemiuex had been down; he was floored for the 1st time against Marco Antonio Rubio in April 2011.

Roy Jones Jr in his commentary referenced the situation to his DQ9 loss to Montell Griffin back in March 1997 when he landed two power shots on Griffin while he took a knee; knocking him out cold. It was also Jones’ 1st career defeat.

Sensing the urgency, Lemiuex to his credit stepped up his game from the 5th frame on and connected with a few meaningful shots but unable to make a difference due to the accumulation of punishment he’s received in the first 12 minutes. In the 8th round, GGG hurt him with another body shot and as Lemiuex was badly wobbled, Steve Willis halted the bout.

According to CompuBox final punch stats, Lemiuex was outlanded by nearly 200 punches. GGG also connected with more than 50% of his punches thrown while Lemiuex merely landed at a rate of 27%. At the end of the fight, Lemiuex’s face was battered into a bloody mess.

After this loss, Lemiuex rebound with 4 straight KO wins notably over a sensational one punch knockout over hard hitting Curtis Stevens in March 2017.

GGG remains undefeated as of July 2017, and since defeating Lemiuex he racked up 3 more victories with his last 2 a stoppage of Kell Brook and a UD12 over Danny Jacobs. Jacobs became the 1st fighter to last 12 rounds and also the 1st fighter since Amar Amari in Jun 2008 to go the distance against Golovkin.
