The Book of Boba Fett just gave us pretty much every Star Wars Easter Egg ever. The Mandalorian Din Djarin tries to reunite with Grogu at Luke’s new Jedi academy, but runs headlong into the Jedi’s rules of detachment.

But we get to see Luke Skywalker (still in his Return of the Jedi outfit) training Grogu, with the advice from Ahsoka Tano. Ahsoka drops hints about Anakin Skywalker and the Clone Wars–overall, seems like she’s pretty content. Many of Luke’s lessons mirror those of Master Yoda–and the episode ends with Luke revealing Yoda’s old lightsaber.

We see the construction of the new Jedi temple that was destroyed in the Last Jedi flashbacks. And Grogu flashes back in a dream sequence (framed like Anakin’s nightmares) that shows us the horror of Revenge of the Sith’s order 66 firstand.

Back on Tatooine, Cobb Vanth returns to challenge the rule of the Pyke Syndicate, which brings him face to face with Sepratist Bounty Hunter Cad Bane. What an episode!

Meanwhile, Fennec Shand and Boba Fett prepare their assault on the Pykes, with the help of Wookie Black Krrsstan, the Mods, a Rancor, and who knows–maybe Luke Skywalker will show up for the endgame.

The episode begins in Freetown, which we last saw in the mandalorian chapter 9. You remember, Mando helps Cobb Vanth and the tuskens to kill a krayt dragon. But now that Cobb vanth doesn’t have Boba Fett’s armor, I was genuinely afraid for him the entire episode.

Cobb Vanth first debuted in the interludes of Chuck Wendig’s aftermath novels, showing what happened in the wake of Return of the Jedi.

The chapter opens with the spinning of a moisture vaporator, reminiscent of an old western trope of the spinning windmill being the only sound in the wilderness before a showdown.

Then we meet up with the Pykes in the middle of a spice deal. In the Clone wars and in solo, we see that the Pykes have pretty much cornered the spice trade in the galaxy. Mining it from the kessel and then distributing it all around the galaxy themselves. These credits are inside of a canto, which is a fun star wars easter egg. This is modeled after a homemade ice cream maker that a background character named Willrow Hood was scarring in the empire strikes back. It’s become a fun underground cosplay, and star wars celebration features a running of the Wilrows

They’re driving an M-68 landspeeder, the same one Han uses in Solo.

This opening is important for a few reasons. It establishes the stacks for Freetown on mos eisley, that the pykes will eventually take over their community. It also shows that even without the armor, Cobb is a badass. Like Qui Gon said in the Phantom Menace, “There’s always a bigger fish.”

The episode is called From the Desert Comes a Stranger and it has a couple meanings. One stranger from the desert is Diun Djarin, who just arrived from Tatooine. But mostly it refers to Cad Bane.

This episode was directed by Dave Filoni, who created Ahsoka Tano for the Clone Wars movie, and is going to be spearheading the Ahsoka series.

The episode is in the 2 genres that run deepest in the DNA of Star wars. There is the classic western, and a samurai film, with Luke sharing eastern teachings with his pupil Grogu. The planet is even filled with bamboo, which mostly grows in Asia.

Luke training his students on a lush green world seems like a nod to his Jedi academy in the legends novels, which was originally built on Yavin 4, the rebel base from a new hope.

So this planet where Luke is building his jedi school is called Elphrona. We saw it in the flashbacks of the sequel trilogy, and in the comic book The rise of kylo ren. That comic details what happened after Ben fled the temple, and shows his first steps in joining Snoke and the Knights of ren.

We see that most of Luke’s padawans were very young, or children. And, after ben collapsed the hut on Luke, he didn;t go ona murder spree. He looked at the temple, and a red cloud formed, and lightning struck the temple, killing everyone inside. So it’s implied that it was actually Palpatine/Snoke who did the murdering.
