Ever since Lola Brooke broke out in 2021 with her ferocious drill track “Don’t Play With It,” she’s been reppin’ her hood. “You have to visit Brooklyn to understand why I am how I am,” the young gun once said. In the Big Apple’s notoriously cut throat hip-hop scene, that hometown allegiance has yielded love from the North Bronx to the Rockaways. A recent tour opening for A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie spread Lola’s gospel across the country as well. When this DMX and Lil Kim disciple returned home, she invited Latto and Yung Miami to her turf to make the “Don’t Play With It” remix video. That the shoot almost got shutdown by the NYPD is just part of the authentic experience. The new “Just Relax,” which arrives with plenty of imperative braggadocio, demonstrates Brooke’s appreciation of her roots, this time with a nod to Queens. Not only did she choose to sample Black Sheep’s ’90s hit “The Choice Is Yours,” she invited the group’s founding member Dres to be on set. No question, she was right at home in our BK ctrl studio – 100% in her element, 100% NYC.
